Check before you choose a shade

Michigan window tint laws, window by window.

Explore the existing state guides for the windows and vehicle type you want to tint. Confirm current requirements and the combined glass-and-film VLT before installation.

Your state

What Michigan allows.

Every window has its own limit, and what you drive changes them. Michigan holds every body style to the same figures, so a sedan and an SUV are treated alike.

Front film banned

Four-season climate with hot, humid summers and harsh lake-effect winters with heavy snowfall.

The bar is the light that has to get through. A full bar is a strict window; an empty one means Michigan sets no darkness limit there at all.

The back glass, usually tied to having both side mirrors.

Every figure here is what a meter has to read through the film and the glass together, so we meter your factory glass first and work back to the film that lands on the right side of the number — before anything is cut.

A guide, not legal advice. States amend these limits, and medical exemptions, reflectivity caps and color restrictions vary. Check with your state DMV or DPS before you commit to a shade.

Reading the number

What does VLT mean for window tint?

Visible light transmission (VLT) is the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass and film together. A lower number means a darker window. Check the requirements for your vehicle and each window before choosing a shade.

The meter reads film and glass together.

Your windows are already tinted from the factory — usually somewhere near 78%. A 35% film on that glass measures closer to 27%, which is how a legal-sounding shade fails a roadside check.

Low number, dark window.

VLT is the share of visible light that gets through. 5% is limo dark and 70% is barely there, so the tighter a state writes its law, the higher the number it quotes.

Exemptions exist, and they’re paperwork.

Most states allow a darker front shade with a signed medical exemption for light-sensitive conditions. It has to be kept in the vehicle, and the rules for it are state-specific.
